- Student Teachers and Special Service Provider Interns
To ensure a productive experience for student teachers and special service provider interns, the following guidelines shall be followed:
- Building principals shall make final decisions regarding teachers or special service providers (“cooperating supervisors”) willing and competent to direct the work of student teachers or special service provider interns.
- No cooperating supervisor shall supervise a student teacher or special service provider unless the cooperating supervisor has the amount of experience mandated by the student teacher's or special service provider intern’s college or university.
- Student teachers shall not be given full class responsibility without the cooperating teacher being available for supervision. A student teacher may not be used as a substitute teacher unless permitted by the student teacher’s college or university.
- Special service provider interns shall not be given responsibility for a full caseload. Special service interns shall be given those responsibilities outlined in the applicable college and/or university guidelines.
- Cooperating Supervisors
- Each prospective cooperating supervisor may accept or reject a student teacher or special services intern. A cooperating supervisor shall receive the request to take a student teacher or special service provider intern at least three (3) weeks prior to the commencement of the assignment unless circumstances warrant otherwise.
- A cooperative supervisor shall be assigned to guide, consult with and advise no more than one student teacher or special service provider intern at any one time.
- A cooperating supervisor supervising a student teacher or special service provider intern may be paid the total amount of money received from the sponsoring college or university in addition to the compensation received from the District pursuant to the terms of the Negotiated Agreements with Teachers and Special Services Professionals.
- Supervision of a student teacher or special service provider intern by a cooperating supervisor shall be credited toward professional growth under the provisions of the Teacher’s Negotiated Agreement, Policy 4130 and the Special Services Professionals Negotiated Agreement, Policy 4830.
- Assignment Process
- The Chief Human Resource Officer or a designee shall work with principals in making assignments for student teachers and special service provider interns in consultation with administrators from the Special Populations Department, as needed.
- The university/college staff members charged with the supervision of the student teacher/special service provider intern shall file with the Office of Human Resources a list identifying the assignments of student teachers/special service provider interns, as agreed between all parties.
- As needed, meetings shall be facilitated between CCSD administrators and the university/college staff members charged with supervision of the student teachers/special service provider interns to discuss any concerns with any assignments or supervision.
