However, students shall be assessed fines for lost, damaged, or defaced books (including those checked out from the library), materials, or equipment. The fines will be for the amount of the loss. In computing a fine, 15 percent of the original cost of a book will be deducted for each year it has been used.
No student shall be charged an overall fee for an elective course; however, students may be required to pay for materials that go into a student project for an elective class, if the project is to be retained by the student.
A fee to cover costs of cleaning such items as choral robes or band uniforms may be assessed, and a rental fee sufficient to cover maintenance costs for the use of the school-owned musical instruments may also be assessed.
Students participating in class activities which are enriching but not required may be required to pay charges covering the cost of the activity. Such charges may include, but are not limited to, admission fees, food costs, transportation costs on field trips, activity pass fees for home activities, and fees for athletic participation. However, it is incumbent upon the principal and/or the principal's designee to make every effort to be sure no student is denied the right to participate in trips or other enrichment activities because of lack of funds.
All fees, fines, and charges shall be waived for students in indigent circumstances. Students in indigent circumstances who shall be entitled to a waiver under this Policy include, but are not limited to, a student who qualifies for McKinney-Vento services, a student whose family has completed the paperwork and qualified for either free or reduced lunch services under the federal poverty income guidelines, and students who are in an out of home placement. Uniform, equipment, and other similar fees for athletics and activities are not included in this waiver; however, alternative sources of funding such as McKinney-Vento subgrant funds may be used to cover such fees. Requests for such waivers should be submitted to building principals who may confer with other District departments on eligibility for said waivers and alternative sources of funding.
