IJOC – School Volunteers

The Board of Education recognizes the need to develop a volunteer program to support District instructional programs and extracurricular activities. Therefore, the services of volunteers may be accepted by the Board, the Superintendent, central office administrators, principals and assistant principals, directors, or persons designated by them to handle this responsibility. The purpose of the volunteer program shall be to:
  1. Assist employees in providing more individualized and enrichment of instruction.
  2. Build an understanding of school programs among interested citizens, thus stimulating widespread involvement in a total education process.
  3. Strengthen school/community relations through positive participation.
A volunteer is a person who works on an occasional or regular basis at school sites or other educational facilities to support the efforts of professional personnel. Such an adult volunteer worker shall serve in that capacity without employee benefits of any type. Pursuant to state law, some volunteers may be covered by Workers' Compensation and liability protection. Volunteers may come from all backgrounds and all age groups and may include any persons willing to give their time to one purpose: helping students and school staffs. Volunteers may be involved in virtually every facet of the operation of the school district from working with students on a one-to-one basis, to performing tasks not involving students. Tasks may involve services in the library, classroom, athletics, music, school play, pre-kindergarten programs, or assisting on field trips and similar activities. Use of volunteers within the District is not to conflict with or replace any regularly authorized personnel allotment. Volunteers will work with students under the immediate supervision and direction of a licensed person. Volunteers shall not teach but may reinforce skills taught by the professional staff. Volunteers are expected to comply with all policies and regulations set forth by the District. In general, volunteers shall not be required to provide transportation to students in their personal automobiles for any school-sponsored activities. In the event volunteers are called upon to transport students in their personal automobiles for school-sponsored activities, they must do so in accordance with Board Policy EEAG, Student Transportation in Private Vehicles, and it's accompanying regulations. Volunteers participating as coaches in District secondary athletic programs will be required to make written application and be approved for such services through the District Athletic Director and Office of Human Resources. Individuals approved as coaching volunteers for District secondary athletic programs will be subject to background checks through the Office of Human Resources before beginning service.
