ICC – Four-Track, Year-Round Schools (Elementary)

A key responsibility of the Board of Education is to ensure that school facilities are available to accommodate the present and projected student enrollment growth in a manner that is conducive to academic excellence and wise use of financial resources. Fulfillment of this responsibility involves the construction of new schools, improvement of existing buildings, and effective utilization of all District facilities. The Board views the use of a four-track, year-round calendar as an effective educational model that will be implemented in the District. District administration is authorized to transition new or existing elementary schools to the four-track, year-round calendar when enrollment projections indicate that the school(s) will significantly exceed building capacity on a single-track calendar for the foreseeable future. District administration will determine the calendar year for transition to the four-track, year-round calendar for specific schools with input from the Planning Office and the Long-Range Facility Planning Committee. Sufficient planning time will provide for the transition so that appropriate communication and preparation may occur. The District will plan and build new elementary facilities with the ongoing assumption that all new schools will transition to the four-track, year-round model as the school enrollment grows. The four-track, year-round model has been proven to be academically effective in the Cherry Creek School District, and offers numerous educational benefits that should be explained to parents and staff members. District administration will ensure that these benefits, such as the intersession model and a longer school year, are fully utilized in four-track schools, and also ensure that the academic program in these schools meet or exceed the standards of the Cherry Creek School District. In order to assure clear communication, the District will notify parents of this policy through admissions, school newsletters, news releases to developers and realtors, and other appropriate outlets.
