EEAH – Student Transportation in School District-Owned Small Vehicles

General The Cherry Creek School District's transportation program includes providing bus transportation for many of the extensive curricular, extra-curricular, educational, athletic, social and event offerings which are available to students. While the District would attempt to provide District bus transportation for many of these events and activities, the District is, for many reasons, unable to provide bus transportation for all of these curricular and extra-curricular activities. Limiting factors may include availability of District buses and/or drivers, the frequency of demand and need for District bus transportation, the number of students and staff involved in any given activity, the cost of each transportation need, the number of off-campus events and activities, and the distance and capability of District bus transportation. District-Owned Small Vehicles When District buses are not available, a qualified staff member may be authorized to transport a student or group of students in another District-owned small vehicle, such as a van or sedan, for school-related purposes, only if he/she has authorization to do so or with special permission covering the specific trip from the building principal or designee. For purposes of this policy, the term "District-owned small vehicle" may include vehicles owned, rented or leased by the school district. Authorization is granted by the Board of Education to school administrators and student achievement services personnel designated by the Superintendent to provide student transportation in approved District-owned small vehicles other than school buses when District buses are not available. Permission for providing student transportation in District-owned small vehicles may be granted by the principal to other professional staff members, including, but not limited to, coaches and activity sponsors. Persons authorized to provide student transportation in school District-owned small vehicles other than school buses, must meet the qualifications established by the State of Colorado for Activity Trip Small Vehicle Operators as defined in the accompanying regulation, EEAH-R, or such other higher limits as may be established by the Superintendent or designee. Records and documents for this purpose shall be maintained by the appropriate administrator. District-owned small vehicles shall meet all required state and federal laws and accompanying regulations governing such vehicles. Use of Seat Belts The use of seat belts in District-owned small vehicles is mandatory for all personnel using vehicles that are equipped with seat belts with the exception of off-road vehicles. Drivers of all District-owned small vehicles shall be responsible for insuring that all passengers use equipped safety belts. The driver shall not begin to move the vehicle until the driver and all passengers are belted.
