General responsibility for the transportation system is vested in the Director of Transportation. All other people engaged in the transportation program are responsible to that administrator.
The District shall operate its own fleet of buses and other types of vehicles as needed. As may be needed from time to time, the District may contract with third party vendors to provide transportation services for some students.
To implement the Colorado Department of Education's requirement for a roster of students transported, electronic ridership cards shall be issued to all students riding on District buses and said cards must be on each student's person when riding District buses.
The District may impose and collect a fee for the payment of excess transportation costs in accordance with state law. If a fee schedule is adopted by Board resolution, the revenues shall be deposited in the transportation fund.
The District may submit to eligible electors the question of whether to impose a mill levy for the payment of excess transportation costs in accordance with state law.
The District shall waive any transportation fee for any student eligible for reduced price or free lunches as determined by federal regulations.
The District shall furnish transportation to all elementary school students (kindergarten through fifth grade) who live beyond a one-mile walking distance from their assigned school, to all middle school students (sixth through eighth grade) who live beyond a one and one-half mile walking distance from their assigned school, and to all high school students (ninth through twelfth grade) who live beyond a two-mile walking distance from their assigned school.
If all students attending a particular school are within the specified walk distance, transportation may not be provided to that school in the discretion of the Director of Transportation. The Director of Transportation also has flexibility and discretion to change bus routes and walking distances as needed based on operational logistics.
